The Slate Phuket - A Hidden Paradise next to Phuket Airport

Updated: Mar 4, 2022

The Slate Phuket

Located conveniently right next to Phuket airport, The Slate Phuket is only a short 10 minute drive and is the perfect first stop for anyone who is looking for a kid-friendly, SHA+ approved (this is crucial for Thailand current travel requirements), beautiful 5 star-resort. The resort is secluded in a tropical area, right next to the beach and a short walk to local shops, restaurants and night market.

First Impressions and Arrival during Covid

We arrived to The Slate Phuket's lobby and got greeted with welcome drinks, as well as instructions on how to receive our arrival covid test results. We felt super safe with the check-in and Covid procedures being very efficient and smooth. The staff took our luggage to the room while another buggy took us to our rooms right after.

The Facilities at The Slate Phuket

The Slate Phuket

The Slate Phuket is a very beautiful, lush and spacious property and you could wander and explore around the resort for hours. We got lost a few times as the resort area is so vast. There are 3 main pools, a large gym, a spa, 5 bars (2 are currently closed) and 3 restaurants. You could easily spend a week at the Slate Phuket exploring, relaxing, and trying everything that the resort and surrounding has to offer. What I love about the resort is how green it is. Almost the entire property was covered in shades of trees and we could hear sounds of the birds and crickets whenever we walked around.

The Accommodation

The Slate room

I was so impressed the moment I got into my villa. I stayed at the Private Pool Suite and it has a King bed, large outdoor bathtub, outdoor pool and dining. The bed was so comfortable that I fell asleep instantly the moment I arrived.

The Slate Phuket villa

The design of the rooms at The Slate Phuket is more dark with warmer tones, making the space feel very cozy. The design of my villa gives complete privacy since my outdoor area was facing a pond with trees around. The staff cleans the pool and the room daily here.

Restaurants

There are 3 main restaurants: Black Ginger, Tin Mine, and Rivet and we got a chance to dine in at the Black Ginger and Tin Mine.

The Slate Phuket Restaurant

Tin Mine is a casual, outdoor breakfast restaurant with a huge selection of food: from American breakfast to Asian cuisines. There is also a noodle and egg station which you can make and customize to your own liking. The breakfast buffet is already included in your stay at the Slate Phuket, and I love the variety of foods here.

Black Ginger Restaurant Phuket

Black Ginger is their most popular restaurant for being certified Michelin in 2021 and 2022. The design of the restaurant is so unique that we were overwhelmed with excitement. The restaurant is only accessible by taking a pulling boat, and it takes around 5 minutes to reach the restaurant. The food here was absolutely incredible! If you have a chance to dine in at the Black Ginger, don't forget to try out their coconut ice cream, it's definitely the best that I've tried around the world!

In-Room Dining Option

What I love the most and one of the biggest reasons that I would highly recommend anyone to stay here during your Sandbox or Test & Go Program (more information on that in my 'Ultimate Thailand Travel Guide 2022' Blog) is the In-Room Dining option. The food was absolutely incredible. I ordered Pad Thai, Tom Yum and Mango Sticky Rice for my first meal in Thailand and it was definitely the best meal I've had in awhile. I would say their Pad Thai and Tom Yum were my favourites out of all of the places that I've tried in Thailand. It was so flavourful, authentic, great portion and just the right amount of spice.

The Surrounding Area

The Slate Phuket

The Slate Phuket is only a few minutes-walk from the beach and local shops, restaurants, and night market. This is one of the most important parts for me when selecting a hotel/resort as I get bored quickly staying in one place. We walked out to the night market everyday and got to experience local massages, restaurants and live performances. Prices around this area are very inexpensive. We did a local massage for around $10/hour and a Pad Thai was around $2 for a large portion plate.

Staff and Service

The staff here was so kind and welcoming. Every time I come back to my room, it was made with the blinds fully closed, or fully open depending on the time of the day. They are also very careful not to touch any of your personal items for safety and hygiene purposes.

Overall Experience

The Slate Phuket is such a good way to start our trip because not only that the resort offers luxury living, it is also kid-friendly, close to the airport, local areas and the beach. We spent 4 days here and had an incredible experience. I highly recommend The Slate Phuket to start your trip to explore this amazing country.
